LEGAL FEES - THE COST OF YOUR DIVORCE

An important question all prospective clients ask is how much does our firm charge for its services in family law matters? Our firm’s attorneys charge between $175.00 and $300.00 per hour for their time, which we bill in increments of 1/10 of an hour. Our fees in divorce proceedings can run from $1,500.00 for representation in a simple uncontested divorce matter to over $50,000.00 in complex and highly contested litigation. On average, a contested divorce that does not involve custody issues will cost between $5,000 to $15,000. If custody is disputed, the cost of your divorce may increase between $10,000 and $20,000. We encourage all our clients to attempt mediation early in their case, or before retaining our firm, to help minimize their fees and costs.

Our firm’s minimum fee for representation in uncontested matters or for court appearances at protective or peace order hearings is $1,000.00 and we require these fees to be paid up-front. In contested matters, our minimum initial retainer is $2,500 and we generally require a $5,000 retainer. In high conflict cases with multi-day trials, our retainer will be significantly higher.

We accept credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express) from our clients and, in contested cases, we will arrange a payment plan with you to help you pay your legal fees.

Divorce litigation can be very expensive and we understand that not all individuals can afford our firm’s services. To that end, we have provided information on this web site for individuals who may want to represent themselves in their divorce proceeding. Many county bar associations also provide free or reduced fee legal services for individuals with lower incomes.
